In memoriam - Dr. Sonya Oppenheimer

Dr. Sonya "Sonny" Oppenheimer, age 88, passed away Friday, October 23, 2020. She was the wife of the late Frank Leo Oppenheimer, mother of Michael Donald (Randa) Oppenheimer of Chicago, IL and Peter Louis (Dominique) Oppenheimer of Milford, Oh, grandmother of Leo Frank and Mae Rose Oppenheimer, sister of the late Marvin (Phyllis) Gevelber.

A beloved long-time member of Cincinnati Children’s faculty, Dr. Oppenheimer was committed to the field of developmental disabilities her entire professional career. She attended Radcliff College Boston, Mather College Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and earned her medical degree from Case Western Reserve University. She had a developmental fellowship at Case Western Reserve University under the direction of Benjamin Spock, MD, and John Kennell, MD. Oppenheimer became the second director of the Cincinnati Center for Developmental Disorders in 1997. She provided more than three decades of service to children with disabilities. Dr. Oppenheimer was honored as a "Woman of the Year" by The Cincinnati Enquirer in 1982 and received the Recognition Award of the Cincinnati Pediatric Society in 1994. Oppenheimer joined Cincinnati Children’s faculty in 1969 and retired as division director in 2005.

Private graveside services were held. In lieu of flowers, her family has requested memorial contributions to be made to Hospice of Cincinnati East (Anderson) location.
