The Cincinnati community recently lost three much beloved pillars of pediatric care and research - Drs. James Heubi, George Hug, and Thomas Maloney. They devoted their lives to improving the health of children in our community and around the world.
James E. Heubi, MD died Aug. 4, 2021, after a battle with cancer. He was 72. Born in Indianapolis Nov. 13, 1948, Dr. Heubi earned his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Riley Hospital for Children. He joined Cincinnati Children’s in 1975 as a Fellow in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition. Dr. Heubi is survived by his wife of 46 years, Margo, his daughters Elizabeth and Christine; son-in-law Michael Hazenfield, MD, and three grandchildren, Harper, Millie, and Whitman (Hazenfield). Christine Heubi, MD, is a surgeon at Cincinnati Children’s.
George Rolf René Hug, MD died July 29, 2021. He studied medicine at the University of Zurich and immigrated to the United States in 1959. He continued his training at Washington University in St. Louis and at Boston Children's Hospital. George enjoyed a long career of service and leadership at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and as Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine. He is fondly remembered by colleagues and former trainees for his absolute commitment to the highest quality of care for his patients and prolific research on childhood metabolic diseases. He is survived by devoted wife Brenda and their six children, Peter (Lan Phan) of Toledo, OH, Christopher (Annapurna Poduri) of Brookline, MA, Barbara (Tom Johnson) of Urbana, IL, Stephanie (Bob Grabar) of New Haven, CT, Kate (Michael Blust) of Cincinnati, OH, and David (Lisa Walker) of Cincinnati, OH; grandchildren Asha and Sita Hug and Clayton Blust.
Thomas Brennen Maloney, MD passed away suddenly while fulfilling his longtime dream of swimming across the San Francisco Bay. He attended Marshall University medical school, and completed his pediatric residency at Cincinnati Children’s in 1987. In 1989, he joined the pediatrics team at Group Health Associates in the Western Hills neighborhood of Cincinnati. There he remained his entire career. He was much beloved by his peers and the families he cared for. He was the devoted husband of 42 years to Ann Cusick Maloney, a father to Patrick (Barbara) Maloney, Matthew Maloney, and Maggie (Arie Polycarpou) Maloney, and the adored Papa of Finn, Wally, and Tilly Maloney.
