Neonatal Jaundice – Update on Current Process Options

CCHMC Home Care offers support for newborn infants meeting criteria for in home phototherapy. This service has been limited by nursing availability over the last several years.  We are currently trialing delivery of the phototherapy unit with a telehealth education visit with our registered nurses in order to be able to serve more families.  We are still optimizing the new telehealth-based process, therefore patients referred for phototherapy may receive either a skilled nurse based or a telehealth-based visit. Infants receiving telehealth-based support will require referral to a testing center for repeat levels (i.e., there will not be in home skilled nurse visits).  The Home Care Agency RN will assist you with all aspects of the referral when it is placed.

To make a referral Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, please contact (513) 636-8121.  On weekends and holidays please contact the hospital operator at (513)-636-4200 and ask to speak to the Home Care Agency Coordinator on call.  This will connect you to one of our RNs who can assist with the referral.

For uncomplicated hyperbilirubinemia, the division of Neonatology prefers infants to be readmitted to their birth hospital.   Call the NCA Follow Up Nurse at (513) 803-2681 who will be able to put you in contact with the attending physician.

The AAP released updated guidance for managing neonatal hyperbilirubinemia last week.  The PediTools site calculator is updated to reflect the 2022 guidelines and can be used to support clinical decision making in newborns who are 35+ weeks gestation. Faculty at Cincinnati Children’s are reviewing these new guidelines and will provide additional updates via Synapse and an edited Community Practice Support Tool on neonatal jaundice.
